Frequency tables and estimating the mean
Frequency tables
A table shows how many times each value appears.
| Goals scored | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frequency | 4 | 7 | 5 | 3 | 1 |
- The is the value with the highest frequency.
- The median is the (n + 1) ÷ 2th value, where n is the total frequency. Add up the frequencies until you reach it.
Example: find the mode and median number of goals.
- Highest frequency is 7, so the mode = 1 goal
- n = 4 + 7 + 5 + 3 + 1 = 20, so the median is the 10.5th value
- Running totals: 4, then 4 + 7 = 11, so the 10th and 11th values are both 1
- Median = 1 goal
Key terms
The mean from a frequency table
- Add a column for f × x: the frequency times the value.
- Add up the fx column (Σfx) and the frequencies (Σf).
- (learn this)
Σ means "the sum of".
Example: find the mean number of goals.
| Goals (x) | Frequency (f) | fx |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 4 | 0 |
| 1 | 7 | 7 |
| 2 | 5 | 10 |
| 3 | 3 | 9 |
| 4 | 1 | 4 |
| Total | 20 | 30 |
- Σfx = 30 and Σf = 20
- Mean = 30 ÷ 20 = 1.5 goals
Common mistake
Divide by the total frequency (20), not by the number of rows (5).
Grouped frequency tables
When data is grouped into classes, you can't find exact averages, but you can find:
- the : the class with the highest frequency
- the class that contains the median.
| Time (t minutes) | Frequency |
|---|---|
| 0 < t ≤ 10 | 5 |
| 10 < t ≤ 20 | 12 |
| 20 < t ≤ 30 | 9 |
| 30 < t ≤ 40 | 4 |
Example: find the modal class and the class containing the median.
- Modal class: 10 < t ≤ 20
- n = 30, so the median is the 15.5th value
- Running totals: 5, then 17, so the 15.5th value is in 10 < t ≤ 20

Estimating the mean
For grouped data, assume every value is at the of its class.
- Find each class's midpoint.
- Multiply each midpoint by its frequency.
- Mean ≈ total of (midpoint × frequency) ÷ total frequency.
Example: estimate the mean time from the grouped table.
| Time | Midpoint | Frequency | Midpoint × frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 < t ≤ 10 | 5 | 5 | 25 |
| 10 < t ≤ 20 | 15 | 12 | 180 |
| 20 < t ≤ 30 | 25 | 9 | 225 |
| 30 < t ≤ 40 | 35 | 4 | 140 |
- Total = 25 + 180 + 225 + 140 = 570
- Mean ≈ 570 ÷ 30 = 19 minutes
It's an estimate because you don't know the exact values, only their classes.
